Compatible SFP modules from IDS: The key to optimising your network
SFPs are an essential component of modern networks in most data centres and enterprise environments. These small but powerful modules allow data to be transmitted over fibre and copper cables at various speeds and distances. SFPs are the key to expanding and optimising your network infrastructure and give you the ability to respond to the changing needs of your business.
With compatible and versatile SFPs from IDS, you aren't tied to a specific hardware manufacturer, yet you get the quality and performance you expect from premium SFP modules. IDS offers the flexibility to expand your network, increase transmission speeds or switch to other optical connections.
What are SFPs?
Small form-factor pluggables (SFPs) are compact transceivers that plug into the SFP ports of network devices such as switches or routers to establish network connections and improve the range and speed. The primary function of SFP modules is to convert electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa, enabling reliable data transmission over long distances. SFPs can support different types of optical connections depending on the network requirements.
SFP modules are designed to be hot-swapped or replaced during operation, meaning there's no need to shut down the network to replace a faulty module or add a new one to increase network capacity. It's particularly useful in environments where continuous network availability is required, such as data centres or corporate networks.
What types of SFPs are there?
SFP modules are extremely versatile and available in various standards and designs to meet a wide range of network requirements. For example, they can be differentiated by manufacturer, speed, range or connector type.
Typically, SFPs from specific manufacturers are optimised to work with their network equipment and may not work well with other equipment. On the other hand, compatible SFP modules are made by third-party manufacturers and aren't tied to a specific vendor. They're designed for a wider range of devices and offer greater versatility. In particular, the connector type plays a key role in the compatibility of SFP modules:
RJ45 (Registered Jack 45)
RJ45 connections are common in office environments and are suitable for copper SFPs connected to network devices via Ethernet cables.
LC (Lucent Connector)
LC connectors are usually duplex connectors and are often used in fibre optic cables. They provide a reliable connection and are among the most common connector types.
SC (Subscriber Connector)
SC connectors are also duplex connectors used in fibre optic cables. However, they are slightly larger than LC connectors.
MTP/MPO (Multi-Fiber Push-On/Pull-Off)
MTP and MPO connectors are typically designed to connect multiple optical fibres in a single connector. They're often used in computer and data centres to provide high bandwidth and connectivity in high-performance environments.
SFPs are also available in a range of speeds and distances. The selection of the right SFP module always depends on the specific requirements and conditions of the network.
What advantages do compatible SFPs offer?
The versatility and flexibility of compatible SFPs make them a popular choice in network technology. Key benefits of compatible SFPs include:
-
Compatibility and flexibility
Compatible SFPs provide the flexibility to select and replace SFP modules as needed without being tied to a specific manufacturer. This makes it much easier to adapt to changing network requirements.
-
Fast availability
Compatible SFPs often have shorter procurement times and can be sourced independently of the delivery conditions of the switch suppliers.
-
Cost efficiency
Third-party SFPs are often less expensive than SFPs from specific manufacturers. However, they offer the same reliability and achieve the same transmission rates and distances.
-
Customised solutions
Many suppliers of compatible SFPs offer customised solutions to meet the specific needs of businesses, allowing you to select the exact modules you need for your network infrastructure.
-
Everything from a single source
One of the biggest benefits of compatible SFPs is getting all the SFPs you need from a single source. Having one point of contact speeds up and simplifies the procurement and service process, and the entire RMA process.

CWDM / DWDM
Coarse Wavelenght Division Multiplexing
With CWDM transceivers, up to 18 wavelengths can be used simultaneously on a single optical fibre. Using DWDM, this increases to 80 or more channels with a shorter wavelength spacing. We offer both CWDM and DWDM SFPs for distances of up to 80 kilometres.
DAC / PATCH cable
We offer patch cables for most applications in both copper and fibre. The length can be customised to your requirements. Delivery with permanently installed SFP or breakout cables is also available.
OADM / ROADM
Optical add-drop multiplexers for your various applications. Available in fixed and reconfigurable versions.
Test setup
Not sure which SFP is best for your application or will work with your specific operating system? Our experts can help you select and set up a test setup. This can be done on-site at your equipment or in our laboratory.
Customised coding
SFP compatibility is always dependent on the operating system of the device. However, if a third party OS or proprietary versions of a manufacturer's OS are used, the general compatibility matrix can often no longer be applied. In this case, only customised firmware on the SFP itself can ensure optimal operation.

Customised SFPs from IDS
In most cases, IT devices such as SFP modules are functional and invisible to the end user. As a result, visual aspects are rarely considered in the design of devices. However, this pragmatic approach has a downside — hardware is usually identified by long and hard-to-find serial numbers, which have limited space on small devices such as SFPs.
To overcome this challenge, we offer the option to store unique and easily recognisable identification data directly on the SFP modules. This information is used to identify the origin and affiliation of the device immediately. In the event of a malfunction, the origin and contact person responsible for the repair or replacement of the module can be quickly identified. Whether you want your inventory number or a fully customised label with graphics, we offer you the ability to personalise your SFPs with various printing options.
