Network optimization for international grocery discounter

Initial situation

In 2020, our client — an international food discounter — faced the challenge of optimizing the network infrastructure and Wi-Fi in around 4,800 stores across nine countries.
The goal was a Europe-wide roll-out, followed by a comprehensive on-site service. With this in mind, the company was looking for a reliable partner who could handle the complex requirements of the roll-out as well as the ongoing maintenance and optimization of the network infrastructure.

Our approach

The challenges of a Europe-wide roll-out across 4,800 stores required precise planning and efficient implementation. Despite the adverse circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic, IDS completed the roll-out on schedule within the planned 18-month timeframe. Up to 22 teams worked simultaneously to ensure rapid implementation.

Technology used

IDS relied on state-of-the-art technology to ensure the project's success and to provide a powerful and reliable network infrastructure. We deployed 4,800 switches and 21,000 access points from renowned manufacturers such as Aruba and Meraki to ensure efficient data transmission and reliable wireless connectivity in every store.

We also successfully implemented 5,000 mobile data capture devices. These devices were seamlessly integrated into the network and played a critical role in the retail environment. Then, 940 kilometers of network cabling were installed to create the necessary physical infrastructure. This extensive cabling forms the network's backbone and enables reliable data transmission in each store.

Tasks for the customer

Our tasks included services like receiving and processing faults, working on the customer's ticket system and stocking spare parts at IDS. In the event of hardware problems, the supplier dealt with complaints directly. A crucial aspect was the on-site field service, which could be on-site within four hours to rectify faults or make urgent adjustments. An efficient reporting and invoicing system rounded off our services.

We were also heavily involved in store refurbishments, expansions and reopenings to ensure that the network infrastructure met each shop's changing requirements and circumstances. Our precise planning and agile approach enabled us to respond flexibly to the client's requirements and ensure a smooth roll-out process.
