What's SD WAN?
Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) is a revolutionary way to simplify branch office networking and ensure optimal application performance by using centrally controlled and managed WAN virtualization. Unlike traditional WANs, SD WANs offer increased network agility and cost reduction.
In the same way that server virtualization abstracts the underlying physical hardware from the logical virtual servers that run on it, WAN virtualization allows one logical WAN connection (either to the Internet or between branch offices) to leverage multiple underlying connectivity technologies (such as xDSL, MPLS, cellular and fiber) simultaneously, but this connectivity is presented to users and applications as a single direct connection to the Internet or a secure site-to-site connection.
SD WAN-enabled networks are able to monitor the health and quality of the WAN and then use these measurements to make intelligent decisions about the traffic flow of applications. This arrangement has several key advantages:
- Real-time services like VoIP and video can be sent over the connection with the lowest latency.
- Intelligent failover and active/active configurations can be used to ensure reliability even if a WAN connection fails.
- WAN connectivity can be added as needed to ensure agility.
- Best of all, once configured, all traffic is automatically managed by the software-defined rules set on the device - no human interaction is required.
